We have ANZAC Day commemorations happening in many parts of the Huon Valley on Monday. These commemorations would not be possible without the 2022 ANZAC Day Organising Committee and the help of community volunteers.
Below is a message from Acting Mayor Sally Doyle:
“I hope you can make it to a Dawn Service, or a march or a mid-morning service. If you can’t attend, remember you can stand at the end of your driveway with a candle and pay your respects, just like we did in the early days of the pandemic.
When I think of our community members, what they’ve been through, the battles they’ve fought, challenges they’ve faced, obstacles they’ve overcome, I always think of the ANZAC Spirit.
The Spirit of ANZAC was suggested by official correspondent and historian Charles Bean. He wrote, ‘But ANZAC stood, and still stands, for reckless valour in a good cause, for enterprise, resourcefulness, fidelity, comradeship and endurance that will never own defeat.’
The spirit of Anzac is still evident today. The Returned and Services League of Australia (WA Branch) has noted that Australians come together when there are major weather events such as cyclones, floods and bushfires, ‘to rescue one another, to ease suffering, to provide food and shelter, to look after one another, and to let the victims of these disasters know they are not alone’.
It is during these times that people show courage, ingenuity, endurance, humour and mateship, the same values that are often spoken about as we pause and remember those who have lost their lives defending Australia.
As Acting Mayor I can think – as I’m sure you can too – of many members of our community who have that ANZAC Spirit.
The Huon Valley Little Athletics will be running the ANZAC Day Sports in Huonville from midday with all their helpers. This is a wonderful event for children as they set out to give their best and not give up.
I hope to see you at one of the services on Monday.
Sally Doyle.”
