Members of the Geeveston Town Hall Controlling Authority, community volunteers and Huon Valley Council staff came together to celebrate the completion of the much-anticipated lift.

The lift at the Geeveston Town Hall removes the barrier of access and gives the opportunity for everyone to enjoy the many wonderful events that are held on the upper level floors of the hall such as exhibitions and social events. There are four possible stops – the Church Street entrance, the Visitor Centre at ground level, the upstairs gallery and the upstairs function room.

Making places accessible is vital for the health and well-being of our communities. It is important that people with mobility impairments are considered equally.

For exhibitioners, artists, caterers and users of the hall upstairs, this means access for all of their equipment and work can now be moved safely via the lift, making the hall as a hire venue much more attractive beyond those living and working in the Huon Valley.

We advocated in our 2019 Federal Election Strategy for lifts to be installed in both the Geeveston and Cygnet Town Halls and received funding through the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program.

Construction has begun on the lift in the Cygnet Town Hall. It is expected to be completed in the early part of 2022.
