In January 2023, Council declared a Climate Change Emergency and committed to taking meaningful action on climate change in Huon Valley. The direct response to this was the creation of a dedicated Climate Change Officer, who is charged with implementing its Climate Change Strategy.

This includes Part A – Carbon Footprint Reduction Plan, endorsed in February 2021, focused on mitigating greenhouse gas emissions both for Council and the community as well as developing Part B – Corporate Climate Adaptation Plan, drafted by the Southern Tasmanian Councils Authority’s (STCA’s) Regional Climate Change Initiative (RCCI) in 2023, focused on reducing climate risk to Council’s assets and services.

To ensure more targeted and coordinated efforts on climate change, Council is underway developing a comprehensive Climate Change Strategy (CCS), integrating both climate adaptation and climate mitigation actions.

The development of the CCS will guide Council’s climate change approach for the next 5 to 10 years and requires community engagement to ensure it reflects the needs and interests of everyone in Huon Valley.
