Council’s Emergency Management Team have been actively responding to the statewide severe weather that has affected the Huon Valley over the past week.

The wet and windy weather is a result of a significant low-pressure system that developed south of Tasmania. This low-pressure system is set to continue for another week, bringing regular fronts across the state.

“Our dedicated Council Works crews have responded to 51 calls across the Huon Valley for road hazards,” said Mayor Sally Doyle.

“Crews have been working day and night to clear trees and branches off our roads. Thank you to our committed staff for working to keep our community safe during this time.”

Due to the extensive damage caused by this weather event, Council’s priority is to keep roads open and ensure the safety of our community and workforce. Crews may not remove all the roadside debris when first attending the scene and will undertake further clean-up works after the event.

The Huon Valley Volunteer SES Unit has responded to 26 Storm Damage requests for assistance from the Community.

Facilities around the Huon Valley have generously opened their doors to people affected by the severe weather, as there are still many Huon Valley residences without power.

Facilities currently available include:

  • Hot showers and device charging stations at Huon Valley PCYC, Geeveston Community Centre and West Winds Community Centre (Woodbridge).
  • Device charging stations at Cygnet Library and Cygnet Community Health Centre.
  • Public showers at Cygnet Football Club.

It is expected that over the next 24 hours the weather will settle compared to recent days. The risk period for winds has passed for most of the state. Minor flooding is no longer expected along the Huon River around Huonville as water levels are expected to remain below the minor flood level.
