Huon Valley Council has welcomed today’s announcement of a reduced speed limit on the Huon Highway at Grove.
The Commissioner for Transport has approved reducing the speed limit from 100km/h to 80km/h along a 2.3km section between Allens Road and Mountain River Road.
Huon Valley Mayor Sally Doyle said the decision was a much-needed improvement for pedestrian and motorist safety at the Grove intersection.
Mayor Doyle said, “Tragically a young man was recently struck and seriously injured by a vehicle at this intersection. This is the first step towards avoiding another terrible incident and a positive outcome for our community who have long advocated for improved safety measures here.”
“The reduced speed limit will give both pedestrians and drivers more time to react, particularly around the bus stop area where many of our young people cross the highway daily. Council has been working with the State Government on solutions for this intersection, and we look forward to more improvements at this intersection and along the highway corridor.”
The new speed limit will take effect once new signage is installed in the coming weeks. Drivers are reminded to observe posted speed limits and drive to conditions.
