A pile of mixed garbage, including black trash bags, cardboard, and debris, lies discarded near bushes and grass. An overturned green trash bin and a metal bowl are in the foreground.

Huon Valley Council is reminding residents of the serious consequences of illegal rubbish dumping, following the issuing of significant fines by Tasmania Police to two individuals who dumped more than two cubic metres of waste in the state forest reserve near Geeveston.

Unfortunately, forestry roads, waterways, and bushland are common areas for dumping—locations particularly vulnerable to environmental degradation. Council continues to work closely with the EPA and Tasmania Police to investigate and act against those who choose to harm our natural environment.

Council reduced the minimum fees at all waster transfer stations in 2024 to help support the community appropriately dispose of waste. In addition, we have lowered charges for fridges and air conditioners and continue to provide free recycling services.

Council operates three Waste Transfer Stations located in Southbridge (Huonville), Cygnet, and Dover. The Southbridge facility also hosts a popular Reuse Shop where quality pre-loved items can be donated and purchased, supporting a circular economy and reducing waste.

Residents are urged to use these facilities and report any instances of illegal dumping to Council or Tasmania Police.
