At a well-attended media event on Monday 28 August, the 2023 Hilltop Hike was launched.

Huon Valley Deputy Mayor Toby Thorpe, together with Ben Fisher of Lifeline Tasmania, Bianca Jackman of the Huon Valley PCYC and Inspector Colin Riley of Tasmania Police officially launched the event.

The Hilltop Hike was created to start a conversation about suicide prevention and mental health. In 2022, our community achieved a remarkable milestone of raising an astounding $67,648 during the 2022 event. These funds went to local mental health services and community mental health training.

This year’s goal is to raise over $100,000 for the Huon Valley PCYC Youth Drop-In Centre, extending its vital services to more days a week, aiming to keep young community members off the streets and provide a safe place to gather and be supported.

Deputy Mayor Toby Thorpe told media that the Drop-In Centre is a proactive response to issues like youth delinquency, social isolation, and limited avenues for positive engagement with our young community members. The PCYC are determined to extend these sessions to ensure safe spaces where youth can develop social skills, build connections and self-confidence and is accessible to all youth across the community.

Get involved

Hilltop Hike isn’t just about raising funds; it’s about having fun and building connections in a welcoming environment. Every dollar and every step counts!

Starting at the Huon Valley PCYC, walkers and runners will take on the challenge of conquering Huonville’s Scenic Hill.

Register as a team or embark on this adventure solo: everyone’s encouraged to embrace friendly rivalry and participate in engaging challenges, including “most funds raised”, “best costume”, and the race to be among the “first 10 persons to reach the top of the hill.”

Upon returning to the PCYC, there will be a free lunch to enjoy, distribution of awards and prizes, and an opportunity to connect with local mental health services in a welcoming, family-friendly environment.
