Optus has scheduled urgent maintenance works for their site at Southport for this Friday 23 August 2024.

Due to an issue with the existing satellite connectivity, Optus needs to transition the site to a different satellite and install a new antenna.

It is expected that the site will be offline from 6am Friday for at least 10 hours. If unexpected issues arise during the maintenance procedure, the site may be offline for longer.

While the site is offline, residents will not have any mobile service – this may include access to Triple Zero.

Optus appreciates the challenges this creates for public safety, local commerce and residents in general and are taking steps to minimise the interruption, including:

  • Sending SMS alerts to affected customers advising them of the maintenance work, including a link for customers can sign up to status alerts if they have an alternate internet connection (e.g. through NBN).
  • Briefing local media and the local Federal MP’s office.

Once complete, the site will continue to function as usual, i.e. with a 3G-only signal for the same coverage area.

As there is currently no equivalent 4G coverage available, Optus has exempted this site from the planned 3G shutdown in October so that it will continue to provide coverage for the local community.
