A person wearing a glove cleans a gutter by placing dried leaves into a green bucket. The scene is set against a clear blue sky.

As the cooler months approach, preparing your home and property for winter is an important step in protecting yourself, your neighbours, and the wider community. The Huon Valley is no stranger to changing conditions, so taking a few simple actions now can make a big difference during wet and windy weather – or in the event of an emergency.

1. Clear Access to Your Property

Make sure driveways, entrances, and access points are free of overgrown vegetation or debris. A clear path ensures emergency services can reach your home if needed, and it also makes it easier for friends, family, and neighbours to check in if required.

2. Clean Your Drains and Gutters

Blocked drains and full gutters can quickly lead to water damage and flooding around your home. Take the time to clean out leaves, twigs, and other debris from your gutters and drains. This helps direct rainwater away from your house and reduces the risk of damage.

Please remember: If you have a culvert on your property, particularly under your driveway, it is your responsibility to keep it clear. Regular maintenance helps prevent blockages and keeps stormwater flowing safely during heavy rain.

3. Connect With Your Neighbours

A strong community is one of our greatest assets in the face of emergencies. Introduce yourself to the people living nearby and have a conversation about how you can support one another during extreme weather or emergency events. Sometimes a friendly check-in is all it takes to make a big difference.
