UPDATE 15 July 2023:

The Minister for Local Government, Nic Street, has announced that there will be no forced amalgamations resulting from the Future of Local Government Review.

The Review will continue however, and submissions to the Review Board are still welcomed until 02 August 2023.

Once the Board hands over its final report on 31 October 2023, each Council will be invited to review the report and make a submission to the government about what they want for their Council area.

Any plans agreed by Councils will be taken to the community for a vote. There will be no changes unless both the Council and community want them.

Stage 3 of The Future of Local Government Review is now underway and an Information Pack has been released.

The Huon Valley Council area is in the Southern Shore Consultation Group, along with the Kingborough and Hobart City Councils.

Background:

The Review has released three potential scenarios for the Huon Valley community to consider.

  1. Establishing two Council areas within the Southern Shores Community Catchment area. The first would consist of the existing Huon Valley Council area and the second would consist of the existing Kingborough Council area, minus Taroona (to be included within Hobart).
  2. Establishing one Council area. This scenario combines the existing Huon Valley and Kingborough Council areas.
  3. Establishing one Council area. This scenario combines the Huon Valley Council area, the majority of the Kingborough Council area, minus Taroona and minus urban Kingston and its surrounds (to be included within Hobart).
